Behind The Music
Desmond Barrett's music ranges from Straight-Ahead Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, and Hip-Hop to Spoken Word, Instrumentals, and Trance. Widely due to his upbringing in Black American Music, as well as African, Island, and Latin Music, he found himself dancing to Funk, Disco, Hip-Hop, and Salsa growing up. With a feel for dance and rhythm, he joined Middle School Wind Ensemble and began his journey as a musician, not just "music lover" at the age of 12. He started on Trumpet, and at that time his parents had gifted him and brothers an Electric Keyboard, a Casio.
Desmond, immensely focused on sports at the time, grew to love this keyboard and translated his knowledge from the trumpet onto the piano...but his sights were elsewhere. Desmond switched to saxophone, the next year, starting on the Baritone Saxophone. Here, his love for the saxophone began.
Fast forward to his first year of High School (2016), Desmond auditioned for River City High's Jazz Band and begins attending local Jam Sessions outside of school--thanks to his mother and friend/drummer Gavin Eckler. Also around this time, Desmond receives his first iPhone, enabling him to fall in love with the iOS' take on a computer's Digital Audio Workspace (DAW) GarageBand--here, he starts learning the artform of Producing.
Desmond found growth in his Saxophone playing, Piano playing, and Producing through persistence, a strict practice schedule, and yearning for the upmost knowledge--which he found through Books, Jam Sessions, Transcriptions, the NorCal Saxophone Legend Danny Sandoval, YouTube, and listening to music at almost all points throughout the day. With Facebook Streams, here-and-there uploads to his then YouTube account, and songs released to his Soundcloud dezdoe, you can hear and experience the earlier days of his journey, till this day.
